Are you ready for the country?

Five days and 500 miles from now I will be starting my summer as a farmer. On a related note, I was in Chicago this weekend since I wanted to see the city one last time before I leave for the farm and it was surreal. I've never cared much for big cities as I've found them to be missing a certain warmth that you can only find in smaller towns. That's not to say big cities don't hold merit, because they certainly do. I've just always preferred quality over quantity and while smaller towns may not have much, most of what they do have is in some form meaningful.
I'm both excited and frightened to work on the farm this summer. I'm excited because it's different from anything I've ever done and I think it can only be a good thing to try new things. It's routine that can kill a soul but leave the body intact. A sort of complacency. Passive suicide if you will. The repetition of days that turn to weeks, months and years. Some people thrive on that and perhaps they are better off for it. I guess my fear lies in that a tree with short roots can be transplanted easily, but when the roots get too long all you can do is chop it down at the trunk.
Throughout the Summer I hope to post here about the subtleties of farm life and some of the daily work that gets done so there will be more when I find time!

Soon to come...Can Music Make Plants Grow? and do they prefer Neil Young or Bob Dylan?
